La gran conjunción de Júpiter y Saturno coincide con el solsticio de invierno y la lluvia de estrellas úrsidas.
Conocido este fenómeno como La Estrella de Belén por la proximidad de la navidad, esta noche del 21 de diciembre, los dos mayores planetas de nuestro sistema solar se acercarán en un evento conocido como ”La Gran Conjunción”.
Al estar tan juntos ambos planetas se verán en el cielo nocturno como un planeta doble brillante.
Las conjunciones entre estos dos planetas son poco comunes, apareciendo cada dos décadas aproximadamente pero este año es algo totalmente fuera de lo común. Es la vez que más se acercan desde 1226 además que coincide con la lluvia de estrellas úrsidas y el solsticio de verano.
El astrónomo de la División de Ciencias Planetarias de la NASA Henry Throop comunicó:
Podrías imaginar el sistema solar como una pista de carreras y cada uno de los planetas como un corredor en su propio carril con la Tierra hacia el centro del estadio. Desde nuestro punto de vista, podremos ver a Júpiter en el carril interior acercándose a Saturno durante todo el mes y adelantándolo el 21 de diciembre.
En el hemisferio norte, el solsticio de invierno el 21 de diciembre es el día más corto con la noche más larga de todo el año.
Se podrá ver en España dirección suroeste entre las 17:25 y las 19:25 hora peninsular como mejor hora.
A parte de este evento poco común, la noche del 21 al 22 de diciembre se podrá ver la lluvia de meteoros Úrsidas de cada año. Durante las últimas horas de la madrugada se podrá ver una media de 5 a 10 meteoros.
